Honours

As an honours student, you will have the opportunity to hone research skills through the completion of an undergraduate thesis, and become familiar with a range of methodological approaches to the study of the ancient Mediterranean and Near East.

Program Requirements

Admission into the honours program requires an overall average of 76% and the permission of the department. In addition, you are expected to maintain an 80% average in the program.

As an honours student in Ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern Studies, you are required to complete 60 credits, at least 48 of which must be at the 300- or 400-level. Courses must include AMNE_V 499, the title under which students earn 6 credits for their honours thesis, and an additional 6 credits at the 400-level. Students are also required to take AMNE_V 200, AMNE_V 300, and a 3-credit language course as a part of their 60 credits.


AMNE Honours Program Admission Process

Eligibility Requirements Overview:

  1. Class Standing of 3rd Year (or higher).
  2. An overall average of at least 76%.

Application Process:

Students may usually only be admitted at the end of year three, at earliest.

Students with third-year status who are seeking admission to the honours program should first contact the AMNE Undergraduate Advisor.

Students must secure support from two AMNE Faculty, who will be contacted by the AMNE Undergrad Advisor to provide references following the completion of Step 3.

Finally, students must complete the AMNE Honours Program Application Form by April 30th (of the academic year preceding their intended entry into the Honours program).


Recommended Course Preparations

  1. Students intending to pursue graduate work in their fields are strongly encouraged to begin studying ancient languages at the earliest opportunity, even if the major does not require it.
  2. In addition, students interested in archaeology are strongly encouraged to include a field school as part of their program (e.g., a course such as AMNE_V 395).
