When: March 22, 2024 4:00pm Vancouver

Abstract: How did Mnesarete, a girl from Boeotia, turn into Phryne the famous beauty of ancient Greece, and how did she end up as an enduring symbol of ancient Greek culture? Phryne is an ideal case study for examining several aspects of ancient Greek social and literary history as no single ancient work devoted to her alone or featuring her as protagonist survives, yet she has had a significant cultural footprint both in antiquity and in the modern world. Through Phryne and her ongoing cultural presence, from Greece and Rome to the present, we can begin to understand how a biography can be assembled from a set of disparate, fragmentary sources and ultimately what goes into the making of an ancient Greek dreamgirl.
