Please join the Archaeological Institute of America’s Vancouver Society and the AMNE department in welcoming the first speaker of 2023, Dr. Greene.
In the past few decades, excavations at the Roman fort at Vindolanda have produced the most extraordinary finds from the northern frontier of the Roman Empire, changing our understanding of life in the Roman army. The site lies near Hadrian’s Wall, and was part of the original frontier line in the late-1st century CE.
Dr. Elizabeth Greene, Associate Professor of Classics and Canada Research Chair in Roman Archaeology at Western University, will present on the site’s recent excavations and share new hypotheses from her work, concentrating on the extraordinary finds from the site, including shoes, inscriptions and artifacts, as well as the unparalleled corpus of writing tablets, to reveal what life was like on the edge of the Roman empire.
Note: This talk is on a Monday evening, not our usual Tuesday evenings.
