Teaching Assistant Positions for 2023-24 Academic Year

The Department of Ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern Studies anticipates hiring teaching assistants for the following course in 2023/24. Courses and job descriptions are subject to change up until the beginning of each term, and some positions are dependent on course enrolment.

A background in Classical Studies would be an asset. Must have excellent spoken and written communication skills. Ideal candidate has experience leading tutorials and familiarity with the subject matter from an interdisciplinary standpoint. Preference given to second year MAs and doctoral students.
AMNE 160 Jewish, Christian and Muslim Religious Traditions 2 96-192 Leading two weekly tutorials. Marking exams and papers, attendance at lectures. Needs background in Religious Studies. Previous experience with TAing preferred. Must have excellent spoken and written communication skills.
AMNE 170 Temples, Tombs, and Tyrants: The Archaeology of the Middle East, Greece, and Rome 2 96-192 Primarily marking exams, assignments, and papers. Needs background in archaeology.
AMNE 215 Ancient Greece 1 96-192 Marking exams and papers, attendance at lectures, holding office hours, invigilating midterm and exam. A background in Classical Studies (e.g. Greek history and culture) would be an asset.
AMNE 216 Ancient Rome 1 96-192 Marking exams and papers, attendance at lectures, holding office hours, moderating discussions and tutorials, invigilating midterm and exam. A background in Classical Studies (e.g. Roman history and culture) would be an asset.
AMNE 225 Gladiators, Games, and Spectacle in the Greek and Roman World 1 96-192 Attendance at lectures; marking exams and assignments; presenting one guest lecture. A background in Classical Studies (e.g. Roman history and culture) would be an asset.
AMNE 235 Greek Philosophy II 1 96-192 Primarily grading tests, papers, and attendance at lectures. Background in either Classics or Philosophy or both welcome; specific experience in ancient philosophy not required.
AMNE 251 Near Eastern and Biblical Mythology 1 96-192 Marking some of the assignments, attendance at lectures. May include leading tutorials with smaller groups that will complement the class sessions. Some expertise in Egyptian, Near Eastern and Biblical mythology preferred.
AMNE 260 Scriptures of the Near East 1 96-192 Background in Religious Studies preferred. Marking exams and papers, attending lectures, delivering 1 guest lecture, running review sessions.
AMNE 301 The Technical Terms of Medicine and Biological Science 3-5 96-192 Attendance at lectures only if TAing for this course for the first time. No background in Greek or Latin needed. Strong English language skills required, both oral and written. Leads tutorials, reviewing lecture materials and teaching some new material; marks tutorial materials and midterms.
AMNE 306 Ancient Technology: Greece & Rome 2 96-192 Marking exams and papers, attendance at lectures, holding office hours, invigilating midterm and exam. A background in Classical Studies (e.g. Greek history and culture) would be an asset.
AMNE 314 Early Empires of the Ancient Middle East 1 96-192 Marking exams and papers, attendance at lectures, holding office hours, invigilating midterm and exam. A background in Near Eastern studies would be an asset.
AMNE 325 Women in the Roman World 1 96-192  Marking exams and papers, attendance at lectures, holding office hours, moderating discussions and tutorials, invigilating midterm and exam. A background in Classical Studies (e.g. Roman history and culture) would be an asset.
AMNE 327 The Roman Army 1 96-192  Marking exams and papers, attendance at lectures, holding office hours, moderating discussions and tutorials, invigilating midterm and exam. A background in Classical Studies (e.g. Roman history and culture) would be an asset.
AMNE 341 Sex, Lies, and Violence in the Hebrew Bible 1 96-192 Ideal candidate is a strong writer and who has the ability to help students make real strides in their writing. Other duties include attendance at lectures, assistance in small-group activities; 1-2 guest lectures (with time for preparation and feedback); quiz writing; and office hours. A background in Religious Studies would be an asset.
AMNE 351 Religion in Ancient Egypt 1 96-192  Marking exams and papers, attendance at lectures, holding office hours, invigilating midterm and exam. A background in subject matter would be an asset.
AMNE 355 Greek Religion 1 96-192 Marking exams and papers, attendance at lectures, holding office hours, invigilating midterm and exam. A background in Classical Studies (e.g.Greek history and culture) would be an asset.
AMNE 371 Ancient Egypt: The Archaeology of the Land of the Pharaohs 1 96-192 Marking exams and papers, attendance at lectures, holding office hours, invigilating midterm and exam. A background in subject matter would be an asset.
AMNE 376 Greek Art and Architecture 1 96-192 Marking exams/papers; attendance at lectures. Helping with in-class student paired/group activities (picture of the day; break-out discussion groups). Knowledge of Greek art preferred.
AMNE 377 Roman Art and Architecture 1 96-192 Marking exams/papers; attendance at lectures. Helping with in-class student paired/group activities (picture of the day; break-out discussion groups). Knowledge of Roman art preferred.
AMNE 381 Theories of Myth 1 96-192 Marking exams and papers, attendance at lectures, holding office hours, invigilating midterm and exam. A background in subject matter would be an asset.

The Department of Ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern Studies expects to be hiring teaching assistants for the courses listed above in 2023/24. Courses and job descriptions are subject to change up until the beginning of each term, and some positions are subject to course enrolment. This position requires that you be physically located and legally able to work in Canada for the duration of the appointment. Please note that the number of available positions is subject to funding availability, enrollment and/or course cancellation. Applications are due no later than May 1, 2023.
