Talk Title: Heavenly Echoes: Reconstructing Liturgical Performance in Late Antiquity
Talk Abstract:
In antiquity, like today, the attention economy was powerful. While religious leaders often tried to keep their world separate from the sordid worlds of stage and politics, liturgical poetry reveals just how actively Jews, Christians, and Samaritans actively competed for the eyes and ears of more general audiences, often using the same tools as actors and orators. Through these poems, religious rituals became important sites of performance in a society saturated with theater, oratory, combat games and animal sports.
