As our keynote lecture\, we are delight ed to host Melissa Funke (University of Winnipeg) who will speak on the top ic ““Mnesarete to Phryne: Fragmentation and Biographical Tradition in Greek Literature.”

Abstract: How did Mnesarete\, a girl from Boeotia\, turn into Phryne the famous beauty of ancient Greece\, and how did she end up as an enduring symbol of ancient Greek culture? Phry ne is an ideal case study for examining several aspects of ancient Greek so cial and literary history as no single ancient work devoted to her alone or featuring her as protagonist survives\, yet she has had a significant cult ural footprint both in antiquity and in the modern world. Through Phryne an d her ongoing cultural presence\, from Greece and Rome to the present\, we can begin to understand how a biography can be assembled from a set of disp arate\, fragmentary sources and ultimately what goes into the making of an ancient Greek dreamgirl.
